Other Breast Diagnostic Services

In addition to mammograms, Breast Health Services provides other accurate diagnostic services.

Ultrasound uses sound waves to identify normal breast tissue, fluid-filled masses or solid masses without using radiation.

Stereotactic breast biopsy uses a special table and computerized digital imaging to localize breast abnormalities for biopsy.

These procedures provide a less invasive, more comfortable way to obtain tissue samples and evaluate breast abnormalities. In some cases, they replace open surgical biopsies.

Breast MRI uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create a three-dimensional picture of your breast. It is an extra tool to help detect and stage breast cancer. Breast MRI has many other benefits:

• It can detect very small tumors
• It can detect tumors under the areola
• If you are receiving chemotherapy, it can show how your lymph nodes are responding
• If you have breast implants, it can see signs of breast cancer better than mammograms can
• If you are young with dense breast tissue, it is very good at detecting tumors
